Super cool mid-60’s Danelectro Longhorn Bass in excellent players grade condition. Tuned E-E just like the Fender Bass IV, it is a fantastic Studio tool and a killer sounding instrument thanks to its lightweight construction and distinctive Lipstick pickups.

Danelectro Longhorn Model 4623 was introduced in 1958 alongside the matching 4-string bass Model 4423 bass and the 6-string Guitarlin guitar. The typically wild design with deep double cutaways and finished in an eye-catching Copper-to-white ‘burst shares many similarities in construction to other Danelectro models with a top and back made from Masonite built around a poplar frame with a poplar neck and rosewood fingerboard. Pickups are the ‘Lipstick’ pickups that Danelectro used almost exclusively from ’55-’69.

The Model 4626 was a ground-breaking in its design when released offering players a regular Bass guitar with two extra strings and Strung low E-to E. It was produced in far fewer numbers than the regular Model 4423 bass and became an instantly popular with session players and in the Studio. This example has had a bit more of a storied history and has had a few changes that help keep the price keen most importantly for value the neck has had the original finish stripped and the body and neck have been refinished. The work has been done to a high level and judging by the patina and wear was completed some time ago. On the front the original clear acrylic pickguard has been removed and the screw holes filled as have the adjustment holes to the rear. The all important pickups and pots are still in situ, pots date to late 1965. The hardware is all correct for the period with the in-house ‘Skate key’ tuners, dual concentric knobs on the split-shaft pots and the the traditional Danelectro Bridge with Dann-O metal plate adjustable for height with a sliding rosewood saddle.

The bass sounds fantastic with all the Danelectro tones on tap, perfect for the palm-muted picked ‘Tic-Tac’ bass lines synonymous with this model. Playability is good thanks to the Medium 29 1/2 in scale length and light weight construction with this bass hitting the scales at 6.9lbs or 3.16Kg. The neck has a comfortable mid-C profile with the bass set up E to E with a medium action.

One super cool and very rare instrument from the wonderful mind of Nat Daniels and his Danelectro company. A wonderful studio tool that thanks to the changes should appeal to players and collectors alike. The bass comes with a modern Gig-bag but will be safely packaged for shipping.
