1968 Fender Jaguar, Sonic Blue
They don't come much cooler than this! 1968 Fender Jaguar, Sonic Blue, Custom colour, block & bound in excellent condition complete with original hard shell Fender case.
The Sonic Blue finish has retained a lot of its original vibrance and has aged beautifully with a slight greening to the finish which creates a stunning overall hue. The guitar has clearly been very well cared for throughout its life. The overall condition is excellent, and besides a scratch to the back of the guitar and some minor edge wear you would expect of an instrument of this age it's hard to imagine a nicer looking example.
Starting from the top, the F-Plate tuners are correct, as is the headstock finish and decal. The guitar plays very well with a comfortable medium 'C' profile neck, currently strung with flatwounds.
All hardware is correct; switches, pots (CTS 49th wk 1965), coloured cloth wiring, and the solder all appears intact. The neck stamp is Dec '67 the serial number dates the guitar to 1968 and all internal factory quality control markings are consistent with others we have seen in the past. The guitar is also marked" S.Blue" in trem cavity.
Tone wise this is an excellent, versatile instrument. With both pickups engaged it's full, warm, percussive and rounded. Switching the phase gives you surf twang for days. Just the bridge pickup gives you a nice cut, top end and twang as you'd expect, which is balanced perfectly with flatwound strings. The neck pickup is warm, bold and well rounded. The rhythm circuit gives a slight volume boost and a really nice full tone, rich in harmonics. The trem is smooth, stable and accurate and a lot of fun to play with. Engage the mute and you've got some really nice percussive sounds to play with. Overall an impressively versatile guitar, no wonder it was Fender's top of the range solid body.
