2010 Gibson Custom Shop Slash AFD Les Paul Standard VOS, Sunburst
Superb 2010 Gibson Custom Slash Signature AFD Les Paul. A Limited Edition guitar based closely on the Les Paul Slash used for the Appetite for Destruction sessions, famously not a Gibson but a guitar build by legendary LA Luthier Kris Derrig. 300 instruments were produced in the VOS finish with a further 100 Aged by the and Signed by Slash. This guitar presents a unique opportunity in that it has been played extensively and has aged naturally giving the guitar an amazing appearance and feel.
The Gibson Custom Shop has recreated the AFD Les Paul in great detail, the body features a 2 piece figured Maple top with figure chosen to closely resemble the original, a lightweight, one piece solid Mahogany body with no weight relief. The solid Mahogany neck has Slash’s preferred slim ’60s profile replicated from the original. The Rosewood fingerboard has Trapezoid inlays. Frets are larger than the thin variety used by Gibson in 1958, the frets are installed over the binding just like the original. The finish is nitrocellulose throughout with the top in a Butterscotch finish that replicates a beautifully faded vintage Les Paul Standard. Internally the guitar has two Seymour Duncan Signature Series Alnico II Pro Slash pickups, great sounding pickups all wired in the traditional Gibson method to independent Volume and Tone controls. The Nickel plated hardware is also lightly aged throughout with a lightweight Aluminum tailpiece, ABR-1 bridge and Kluson Deluxe Tuners with keystone buttons. There is no pickgurd fitted just like the original, pickup surrounds and poker chip are cream plastic.
As well as its killer appearance the is one off the lightest Les Pauls to come through the shop sitting at a featherweight 8.1lbs or 3.71kg on our scales. The neck has a familiar early ’60 type profile and measures 23.39mm at the first fret and 24.9 at the 12th. The nut measures 43.65mm. The un-covered Zebra Alnico II pickups measure 7.92K in the neck and 8.27K in the bridge.
Retailing at $9200 when new in 2010 the 300 VOS instruments sold out immediately such is the popularity of Slash and the reverence the Derrig Les Paul is held in. The VOS instruments rarely come up for sale and the Aged and Signed guitars are even rarer leaving this guitar as a somewhat unique prospect.
