An incredible Les Paul to honour one of the greatest of all Les Paul players, the Gibson Jimmy Page No.1 Les Paul Standard was released in 2004 after extensive research by the folks in the Gibson Custom Shop, a trip to visit Jimmy Page and unrivalled access to the guitar now affectionately referred to as “Number One”.
“Number One” is an original Gibson Les Paul Standard that Jimmy Page acquired from Joe Walsh (James Gang; later Eagles) in April of 1969, it would quickly become his go to instrument of choice and was used extensively in the studio and on stage with Led Zeppelin. Famously the guitar had had its neck reprofiled prior to Page owning the guitar - one of the things Page liked about the guitar. Due to sanding of the neck the serial number on the original guitar is no longer present. But most people agree that the Les Paul is probably a late 1959, or early 1960. “Number One remains in his possession with Page describing the guitar his “wife” and “mistress”, and calls it irreplaceable. Whilst in Pages possession the Kluson tuners were changed for Grover Rotomatics and at some point the the bridge pickup was replaced after it failed on tour.
Released in 2004 the Number One reissues proved to be an instant success, released in three tiers with 25 guitars Signed, played by Page and hand aged by Tom Murphy, 150 Tom Murphy aged guitars and a final run of lightly aged or VOS instruments. The Signed and Aged runs both sold out quickly but due to its popularity the run of VOS instruments would continue until 2007.
Featuring a solid mahogany body with a carved figured Maple top, Mahogany neck with long tenon, 24 3/4” scale length and 1 11/16” nut width. The 22 fret dark rosewood fingerboard is inlayed with vintage accurate trapezoid inlays. Hardware consists of a no wire- ABR-1 bridge and stop tail piece in aged Nickel with cream pickup surrounds and pickguard and gold ‘bonnet’ knobs.
Additional features unique to this model include a Custom profile neck taken from a mold made directly from No1, a specifically chosen nitrocellulose ‘Page Burst’ finish with a fade to the sunburst replicating the finish of the original, Grover Rotomatic tuners with dummy screw holes from where No1’s original Kluson tuners fixed, two Jimmy Page Custom BurstBucker pickups with measurements taken from No1 and wired out of phase with a coil tap on the bridge pickup just as the guitar is currently.
Weighing in at 8.7lbs and in excellent condition, the guitar has some of the best ageing work we’ve seen from Tom Murphy and the Gibson Custom Shop and has had no modifications or repairs and shows only minor signs of use.
The guitar comes with its  framed Certificate of Authenticity signed by Jimmy Page and Rick Gembar, original Gibson Case and shipping box.
